National Guard deploys 800 in takeover of policing in Washington DC

The White House reported that the magnitude of the violent crime crisis places the District of Columbia among the most violent jurisdictions in the United States.  In 2024, the District of Columbia averaged one of the highest robbery and murder rates of large cities nationwide.  Indeed, the District of Columbia now has a higher violent crime, murder, and robbery rate than all 50 States, recording a homicide rate in 2024 of 27.54 per 100,000 residents.  

However AXIOS reports that Washington DC dcrime is down year-to-date compared to 2024, according to MPD's tracker:

Violent crime: ⬇️ 26%

All crime: ⬇️ 7%

Robbery: ⬇️ 29%

Homicide: ⬇️ 12%

Aggravated assault: ⬇️ 20%

Sexual abuse: ⬇️ 48%

The White House reported federal officers arrested 23 people in Washington, DC, overnight and seized six illegal handguns, calling it “only the beginning.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the takeover of DC police could last longer than 30 days.
